The history of New Haven begins in England. During the 1500s explorers were being sent out to find new lands where colonies could be established by their monarchs. The English explorers wanted to found colonies to make England strong against its enemies. Their first efforts met with failure and discouragement. In 1587, over 100 men, women and children were left on the coast of what is now North Carolina. Three years later when a ship was sent back, there was no sign of them.
In England the times were tough with many men out of work. In 1606 King James gave charters for two companies. One the London Company who was assigned the area from the coast of what is now Virginia and North Carolina inland for 100 miles. The other was the Plymouth Company whose land was also to extend inland 100 miles and included New England down through Maryland. Neither company was to establish settlements within 100 miles of each other. The first group sailed in December 1606 and settled at Jamestown.
In the North, the Plymouth Company's first attempt to set up a colony at Kennebec, failed. In 1614, John Smith explored the coast of the Plymouth Company's area and drew a map and named the territory New England. In September 1620 a group of 102 Separatists sailed for the new world on the Mayflower. Off course, they finally sighted land at Cape Cod and decided to stay in that area. They became the first organized settlement in New England. They drew up the Mayflower Compact which separated themselves from the Plymouth Company politically.
In 1625, King Charles I came into power. In 1629 he dissolved Parliament and ruled for eleven years without it. He sought to crush opposition to his views and subject his people to complete submission.
The rule of Charles resulted in a great migration to avoid his oppression both political and religious. Over 20,000 people set sail for America during his reign. Many of England's best educated men and women of the best character fled. On June 26, 1637, the sailing ship Hector arrived in Boston. The Hector carried a congregation of Puritans led by Theophilos Eaton and Rev. John Davenport.

The beginning history of New Haven can be centered around its location. The wide deep bay at the outlet of two rivers with the two overlooking rock ridges was a logical settlement site. After hearing of such a site on the sound East of the Dutch settlement at New York, the Eaton and Davenport group sent out and advance scouting party of seven men. They spent the winter of 1637 in the area and determined that it was a good site for a settlement. The following Spring the remainder of the congregation set sail for the new site from Boston. By arriving in the Spring they had time to prepare for the next hard winter weather.
Yale University is New Haven's most distinguished citizen. Yale was founded when ten Congregational ministers met at the home of Rev. Samuel Russell in Branford. Each minister contributed books aimed at forming a college based on the English liberal arts. A Charter was granted from the Connecticut Colony in 1701. In 1716, the citizens of New Haven pledged money toward a building to house the College in the city. The fund was not large enough to begin construction. A donation in 1718 by Elihu Yale allowed the college to go forward and the Trustees named the college after Yale. Since its opening Yale University has turned educated people who have become influential in the leadership of the country.
New Haven has been home to many industrious men and well known products. Men like: Eli Whitney, Eli Whitney Blake, James Brewster, A. C. Gilbert, and Oliver Winchester have added their inventiveness to the growth of New Haven. Additionally New Haven, from its beginning, was a location for merchants and traders who sent their ships out from the harbor to bring back the goods and raw materials needed by the new country.
Today, New Haven is a progressive city with many assets, trying to remake itself. A city with a rich heritage to look back on and a rich future to plan for. It benefits from its fine educational and medical centers, its transportation access, its physical attributes and its citizens.
